We’re pleased to announce that we’ve also wrapped up the review of the 2Toms SportShield Anti-Chafe product. If you didn’t catch our initial review, you can check out our first look at SportShield. Basically, SportShield is a full body product similar to 2Toms Blistershield product that we reviewed earlier.
SportShield is available in a roll on version and a single use towelette product. During these tests, we used the single-use version. For this test, two testers used the product five times each in a variety of conditions and activities. The product was used by a male and a female tester while running, hiking, and cycling. The product was used in almost any place where chafing or rubbing could occur.
Running with SportShield
Both testers used SportShield on medium and long distance runs. We tried SportShield with cotton and technical shirts and tried to test in a span of different temperatures and conditions. You can review some of our initial impressions of SportShield in our first review. We also used SportShield to prevent rubbing under bra straps, a recent source of quite a bit of discomfort. We also used SportShield to prevent nipple irritation, chafing between thighs, and also butt chafing.
Cycling with SportShield
In addition to using SportShield during runs, we also tried it while cycling. We’ve used other chamois cream products and found them pretty uncomfortable. Most were too greasy, too runny, or too messy to be really useful. SportShield is a very different product. SportShield is a very slick product, but doesn’t leave any residue or a damp feeling on your skin. After applying SportShield, I’d normally give it a minute or two to dry/soak in, just to make sure it didn’t rub off. After a few times of doing this, I realized it was not necessary at all, as the SportShield really won’t rub off. I tried to rub SportShield off my hands after applying and it just can’t be done. Now, if you use just a little soap and water, it’ll come right off.
Back to cycling. After applying the SportShield to the places I’d normally apply chamois cream, I tossed on my cycling shorts, and headed out for a few rides. Both times, I rode between 25 and 30 miles in clear weather, temps in the mid 60s.
Results and Final Thoughts:
I really likes stories. I like telling long and involved stories, but in this case, the story is pretty simple. SportShield just works. It works well to prevent chafing under bra straps and heart rate monitor straps. It works well on nipples, thighs, butt, and just about anywhere else you can chafe. It worked under technical shirts and worked better than expected under a cotton shirt. We can’t recommend wearing just a cotton shirt with SportShield, largely because we can’t recommend wearing a cotton shirt period. But if you must, SportShield will extend the distance you can run before experiencing serious chafing.
Both testers were concerned about SportShield wearing off after extended exercise, but we didn’t experience any decrease in effectiveness even during runs to 10 miles. Though it’s a little messier than the roll on, I think the single use towelettes are more practical. It’s easy to tuck another packet into your bike pouch or running shorts in case you begin to experience chafing in places you didn’t treat before working out. The product really does have a clean feel, especially after a few seconds of drying. SportShield really won’t rub off, so you’ll need to wash your hands with soap and water after applying.
The bottom line is that SportShield does a really good job preventing hotspots and chafing. Everyone will have a slightly different experience, but we’re confident that SportShield will reduce or totally prevent chafing if used properly.
