The White Lake Triathlon is the first Half Ironman distance event in the Inside-Out Sports Triathlon Series, formerly the North Carolina Triathlon Series. The event is so popular that Setup Events, the event organizer, now runs two half IM distance races and two sprint races on back to back weekends.
The event is popular for a number of reasons: the flat and fast course; the crystal clear swim, normally wetsuit legal water temps; and the list goes on.
The bike course is a flat loop with very few turns. The course is open to vehicular traffic, though being a pretty rural area, there’s not too much traffic. The final stretch of the 56-mile course is a bit rough due to the deteriorating road surface. There are three aid stations scheduled for the bike course, one at 18 miles, one at 32 miles, and a final one at 45 miles. Overall, a nice course with good chance of strong winds on parts of the course.
The run is a simple out and back. Though there is some shade on the course, most people consider it very hot with minimal cover. Be sure to pack your sunscreen and reapply as necessary. You’ll find aid stations every mile stocked with water, Heed, cola, HammerGel, E-Caps, oranges, ice, and more, including bathrooms.
