Description:
2014 Bone Island Triathlon:
- When the first Spanish explorers came to Key West there were bones everywhere, littering the beaches and rocky shores; bones resulting from century-old wars between the native Calusa & Carib Indians.
- Thus, the explorers named this place Cayo Hueso; Isle of Bones; Bone Island. The name was apt for the people who followed: settlers who lived by causing shipwrecks and then racing out to the reef to claim their spoils.
- Bahamians who came to these shores in search of who-knows-what and stayed to become part of a remote island city; gritty, gutsy survivors from around the Caribbean and some who made their way south and west from the peninsula of Florida & beyond.
- Scavengers, gamblers & military men forced to forge a tough new breed on an unfriendly landscape.
- From this sparse beginning comes the background for one of the toughest 2014 iron distance races that will be the only to occur in North America in January: The Bone Island 140.6 & 70.3!
