REI Double Shot Review

REI Double Shot Hydration Pack ReviewI’ve been using the REI Double Shot Waist Pack for about two years.  The Double Shot, and it’s smaller cousin, the Single Shot, are waist packs that allows you to carry one or two water bottles, a zippered pouch for your keys or cell phone, and two small pockets for gel packs.  The Double Shot is available in two colors: Orange and Gray and Aqua and Yellow.  The pack includes two 24oz. water bottles.

REI Double Shot Appearance:

The Double Shot is a basic waist pack.  The water bottle slots are angled a bit, providing easy access.  The center zippered pouch is roomy.  I have no trouble carrying a few gels, my keys, and my cell phone.  The construction is solid overall, but the retaining straps that are supposed to hold the bottles are a bit flimsy and many folks report them pulling loose.  I’ve never used the cords and don’t think they are necessary.

REI Double Shot Comfort and Fit:

Since the pack is adjustable, you can choose to wear it high on your hips for comfort, or lower for stability.  I prefer to wear the pack low around my hips, as it prevents excessive sloshing and movement.  The adjustable straps are well made, but the buckle that holds the straps tight loosens a bit if you run on uneven surfaces or carry a full pack.  This can be a bit annoying, but is similar to my experience with other packs.  Though the pack is mesh and breaths well, you will sweat quite a bit under the pack.  I recommend tucking your shirt into your shorts; the pack can rub and irritate if you wear it directly on your skin.

The bottles are close together and some people complain that this is a bit unbalanced.  When I first started using this hydration pack, I noticed the balance issue, but in the past two years, I’ve gotten used to the feeling and don’t find it uncomfortable.

I’ve used this pack for extended runs, up to 15 miles, and can’t complain about the comfort at all.  Make sure you alternate your drinking to keep the pack balanced as you consume the fluids.  I’ve also swapped out the included bottles for larger containers.  The bottle pouches are large enough for any bottle that you could use in a bike cage.

Overall Thoughts on REI Double Shot Pack:

I highly recommend this hydration pack for triathletes, runners, and anyone else that needs to carry a great deal of fluid to remain hydrated.  I’ve used backpack systems and find that the weight on my shoulders causes posture issues.  After 10-15 miles, the backpack hydration packs can be taxing.  Using the Double Shot, I’ve not experienced any fatigue or comfort issues.  The very reasonable price, overall construction, and comfort make the REI Double Shot a very useful hydration pack.
